Keynote Speaker
The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Pascal Marquet, from Université de Strasbourg. Professor Marquet is the Director of LISEC – the Education research centre – and Dean of the Faculty of Education at Université de Strasbourg. He has been working for 20 years on the use of ICTs in education and training, and especially on how they affect the learning conditions. Among his major research contributions is the theory of instrumental conflicts, an explanatory framework for understanding learners’ difficulties in situations where using ICTs was expected to smooth the learning and competence building processes.
Professor Marquet’s paper will deal with the obstacles to using ICTs in education and training and the resulting effect on the development of e-learning and m-learning. Making it possible to access education and training programmes and resources anytime and anywhere is one of the challenges which e-learning – and now m-learning – attempt to address. Though hardware and software tools do exist, instructional engineering issues are still pending. The concept of instrumental conflict, which was inspired by activity theory and by the concept of instrumental genesis, explains the obstacles to learning in situations where technical systems are used. It often happens that disciplinary objects – such as teaching contents –, instructional objects – e.g. scenarios and models –, and technical objects – for example software and e-learning platforms –, interfere with each other when brought together, while each of them taken alone would work properly. These are types of dysfunctions which the approach in terms of instrumental conflicts sheds light on, opening new ways to a better understanding of the non-use of ICTs.
